Hypnosis:

What is hypnosis?

Many individuals have experienced the stage hypnosis which is not the true aim of hypnosis. This is unfortunate as entertainers have suggested trance as a mysterious or even supernatural phenomenon.

The truth is that hypnosis is not mystical or other-worldly, and all people will experience trance state in their lives. Day dreaming is one example of this - perhaps you have been driving a car and suddenly are aware of yourself behind the wheel. The detail of where you have been and where you are going becomes blurred before being jolted back to full concentration.

When performing a task which is automatic, such as gardening, or even walking the familiar aisles of the supermarket, the mind wanders and sets the conscious mind free. Day dreaming is the first level of trance state.

In hypnosis, you sink deeper and deeper into a trance state until you are in such a deep state of relaxation you are able to take suggestions into the subconscious mind. No therapist can make you do anything which doesn’t sit with your values or beliefs and so therefore the client will always follow the suggestions which their unconscious mind accepts.

How is hypnosis useful?

As a therapy, hypnosis is useful for many areas of functioning, both physically and mentally. The function of deep relaxation itself produces benefits such as improved pain threshold, improves sleep, reduces stress and can assist in lowering blood pressure and reducing heart rate.

Concentration can be improved and the capacity to learn stimulated. The more hypnosis is practiced the easier it becomes and the more efficient the person is able to recall memory and manage behaviours.
